Oakland's orthodox congregation Beth Jacob was organized in 1887 and incorporated in 1895. It was an outgrowth of the Oakland Hebrew Benevolent Society. Its building in West Oakland was constructed in 1908, and its Hachnosas Orchim (charitable guest house) was established in the 1920s. During the Great Depression and World War II, it experienced some financial difficulties. Holocaust survivors, who preferred a more traditional house of worship, and more affluent members, contributed to a postwar revival that enabled it to move to a new location and building (1955). The original structure became a Baptist church.
